Tips to Get the Most Out of Career Fairs
- Dress Professionally, first impressions are important.
- Come Prepared with a 30 second advertisement about yourself. Practice in front of a mirror or with a friend.
- Bring at least 30 copies of your resume to give to employers.
- Be Organized, carry your resumes, pen and a pad of paper in a portfolio.
- Allow yourself adequate time. You may need to return between classes. Remain patient while waiting to talk to a representative.
- Prioritize the employers you're most interested in. If your schedule allows, you may find it easiest to start with the employers in which you're the least interested. This will allow you to hone your approach and to be most confident when you approach the employers you're especially excited about. Be sure to balance this tip with the reality that you may have little time and that many other students may be interested in the same employers. Assume that you will need to wait to speak with some employers.
- Introduce yourself. Offer a firm handshake, say "hello" and state your name. Welcome the representative to DeVry. Have your resume ready to give to the employer. Be prepared to give your 30 second advertisement at this time.
- Take notes when you inquire about next steps and the possibility of talking with additional managers. You will not be able to take advantage of this information if you don't record it.
- Ask the representative for his/her business card Having the business card of the representative you have just spoken to allows you to have a direct contact with the organization and can serve as a reminder to send a thank you note
- Be courteous! In addition to representing yourself, you also represent DeVry University.
- Send a thank you letter, make yourself standout from the crowd.
